Beartooth Elk Outfitters has operated guided elk hunts in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness of south-central Montana since 1987. Our family has hunted and guided this country for three generations. We hold a US Forest Service outfitter permit covering 80,000 acres of roadless wilderness — country that sees fewer boots per year than almost anywhere in the lower 48. This is not a high-fence or ranch operation. We hunt free-ranging wild elk in rugged mountain terrain at 8,000–10,500 feet. Hunters access the country on horseback, camping out of traditional canvas spike camps. It is physically demanding, authentic, and — when it comes together — deeply unforgettable. Our success rates average 75–80% on legal bulls over a typical 7-day rifle season. We run archery, rifle, and muzzleloader hunts from September through November. Party size is limited to 4 hunters per camp to maintain quality and a genuine wilderness experience.
